July 2007

This issue contains our photo-coverage of the Great Western Terrier weekend in June - pages and pages of beautiful photos and show results for you to peruse! Also, DeeAnn & Wayne Simpson have allowed us to publish the story of their beautiful Kaylee, who succumbed to Valley Fever while pregnant. Their story helps inform readers of the fungus which causes Valley Fever and where it exists, and why medications and cures are very hard to come by. In another very personal story, Julie Cooper introduces us to her "Katie" - who is a natural seizure-alert dog. Other topics include Canine Eating Disorders, The Alpha Factor and Dog Aggression, coverage of the Schnauzer Immersion Seminar in Dallas, and a follow-up on AB1634.

Following up on the Pet Food Recalls in March and April, we have an overview of the recall events from AVMA; we take a look at other harmful substances which may be lurking in processed pet foods - including menadione (synthetic vitamin K). Suggestions are made for improving your dog's diet, whatever it may be. Two articles reprinted from Canis Major explore solutions to large numbers in animals shelters, and one of those covers the Miniature Schnauzer Maddi, who has a foundation bearing her name to help shelters and shelter dogs. Our show photo gallery is from the California Mission Circuit, and we also have photos of MSCSC club members enjoying a meeting at Lake Mathews. Cover promotes the upcoming June terrier nationals at Cal State Long Beach - Great Western Terrier Association.

July 2006

We decided to add a bit of fun to the cover this time since one of the big features in this magazine was our June show known as "Great Western." Pictured is "Bling" - winner of the MSCSC and AMSC specialties this year. She is formally known as CH Regency's Black 'n Bling Bling and is owned by Bev Verna, handled by Jerry Weirick at the specialties, with Judge Wyoma Clouss. The issue contains our interview with the "captain" of Ruedesheim MS based in Oklahoma - Anne Lockney and her story is accompanied by comments from her long-time handler, Barbara Mazgiel. Another very interesting article was written by Laura Wallace-Rhodes, a "newbie" to the sport of dog shows. She describes her experiences with her "Hero" a puppy bred-by and destined to be shown by Joan Huber. Great Western is featured in our photo gallery, and three of the four judges on specialty days sent us their comments regarding their entries. Additionally, there is an article on heat-related injuries by a veterinarian. Finally, from the AKC Syndicate, we have a feature on Presidents and their dogs.

May 2006

This issue contains a lot of GOOD READING! The theme is vaccinations, and we feature quite a bit of information used with permission from the website of Dr. Robert Rogers, a DVM in Texas who strongly advocates adopting new/fewer vaccinations in our pets. From the Simply Schnauzers Discussion Forum, the results of our Survey on Veterinary Care are very interesting. Tied right into the first two articles is an article debating "Big Bucks in Vet Business." Meshing with the vaccination theme, we have included a summary called "Rabies Today" and some information on bats & rabies. Likewise, summer and ticks bring us some interest in tick diseases and the lyme vaccine, and we have a very good overall summary of that. You will cringe when you read the near-tragedy of a Mini in a California grooming shop. And, just to find out how knowledgeable you are about your own groomer & grooming shop, we include a quiz and a discussion of the possible answers. Finally, there is information about law suits against establishments that bring injury or death to our pets.

March 2006

After the 2005 yearbook publication which served (this year only) as the "January issue," the March publication was the first issue of our sixth year (2nd year in print). It contains some remarkable MS news stories. We first spotlight Mrs. Rebecca Hawley, who happened into the breed quite by accident and taught herself to groom and show MS. She recently celebrated her 95th birthday, and still mentors Canadian MS fanciers. A group of Cactus State MS members did very well at the International Show in Tucson in March, and we have photos and story from that. An important feature is coverage of the first multiple-puppy litter in our breed in the U.S. conceived from frozen semen. Once again we feature more of our MS family abroad - this time, part 1 of a history of MS in Australia. There is an article about an Animal Whisperer, coverage of the first AMSC-hosted Obedience Trial at the Louisville Roving Specialty; Westminster from a Spectator's Point of View; Obedience and Conformation results from Louisville, and photos from the St. Patrick's Day Costume Contest at Louisville. Finally, there is feedback on the 2005 Yearbook, and lots of Mini Moments for you to enjoy!
